The students at John F. Kennedy Catholic School can. On Jan. 9, JFK students competed in the preliminary round of the Scripps National Spelling Bee sponsored by The Dispatch and Rock Island Argus. After having homeroom competitions involving all students, the final 18 students from grades four through eight competed against each other.
Fifth-grader Bethany Donahue won the preliminary round at JFK, and eighth-grader Cayton Wallace was the runner up. Bethany will compete against other area spellers at the regional spelling bee on March 17 at Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill. The winner from the regional level advances to the national spelling bee in Washington D.C.
