Remembering Deacon John Pistone

Deacon John Pistone, one of the early leaders of the permanent diaconate in the United States, died March 23.

John served as executive director of the Secretariat for the Diaconate of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops, executive director of the National Association of Deacon Directors, and director of Diaconate Formation for the Archdiocese of Chicago. 

John and his wife, Rae, were active in many parish and diocesan ministries including ministry to the homeless, provision of food to the needy and assisting women in troubled pregnancies.

John authored many articles on the diaconate and conducted retreats, presentations and workshops for local, regional and national conferences.

Deacon John and Rae Pistone were the keynoters at our first Diocese of Davenport Deacon Convocation held Oct. 5-6, 2002 in Bettendorf.
