Jean Gardina, 80, a resident of Davenport, died Monday July 6, 2009 at her residence in Davenport following an extended illness.

Funeral services and a Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 10, 2009 at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, 916 E. Rusholme Street, Davenport. Burial will be in the National Cemetery Rock Island Arsenal. Visitation will be Thursday from 4-7 p.m. at the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home. You are invited to join the family to pray the rosary Thursday at 4 p.m. to begin the visitation. There will be additional visitation on Friday in the gathering space at the church from 9:30-10:15 a.m.

Theresa Jean Gettings was born Sept. 8, 1928 in Frugality, Pa., a daughter of Michael J. and Beatrice (Ratchford) Gettings. She was united in marriage to John A. “Jack” Gardina on Feb. 18, 1950 in Cresson, Pa.

Jean graduated from St. Francis College, Loretto, Pa., with a B.A. in education. She had been a substitute teacher for the Davenport parochial school system for many years.

Mrs. Gardina had been an active member of St. Paul the Apostle Church, the Altar and Rosary Society and St. Theresa’s Circle, as well as the Daughters of Isabella. She had also enjoyed bowling and was a member of the U.S.B.C. She was also a member of various card clubs, and always looked forward to the camaraderie.

Jean was a volunteer poll worker and assisted for numerous city, county, state and federal elections.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the building fund at St. Paul the Apostle or to Assumption High School.

Survivors include her loving husband of 59 years, Jack; daughters Faith (Larry) Endresen, Bettendorf; Hope Gardina and her husband, Dan Johnson, Davenport; Claudia (Scott) Mescher, Hibbing, Minn.; Cindy Gardina, Oakbrook Terrace, Ill.; Michelle Kolar, Davenport; Monica (Mike) Slamkowski, Colorado Springs, Colo.; Jackie Gardina, Putney, Vt.;  sons Tim (Ileana) Gardina, Managua, Nicaragua; Kevin Gardina, Muscatine; Tony (Stacey) Gardina, Franklin, Tenn.; 21 grandchildren, two great grandchildren; a brother, Jim Gettings; sisters Judy Baker and Pat Conrad, all of Cresson, Pa.; and Eleanor Latterner, Deltona, Fla. Mrs. Gardina was preceded in death by her parents and sisters, Winnie, Lorraine, Mary Alice, Louise and Connie. May they rest in peace.
