LITURGY/PRAYER

Bettendorf — A public rosary will be prayed on  Oct. 10 at noon at the southwest corner of Spruce Hills Drive and Middle Road. The purpose is reparation for the sins of the United States. The four mysteries of the rosary will be said, followed by the Divine Mercy Chaplet. All are welcome.

Bettendorf — Quad-City  Right to Life will sponsor its 19th annual Life Chain from 2-3 p.m. Oct. 25 on Middle Road at Happy Joe Drive.

Houghton — A public square rosary crusade will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, outside St. John Catholic Church in Houghton. All people from throughout the diocese are invited to attend this recitation of the rosary, which commemorates the anniversary of the Blessed Virgin Mary appearing before three children at Fatima in Portugal in 1917. The apparitions began on the 13th day of each month from May to October of that year. For more information about the rosary crusade, call Marilyn Walljasper at (319) 470-6830.

Iowa City — All Catholics are invited to a Mass for priests to be celebrated at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29, at St. Mary Catholic Church. Bishop Martin Amos will preside at this Mass, which is being celebrated in response to Pope Benedict XVI’s decree of the Year for Priests. The special year began June 19. St. Mary’s is located at 228 E. Jefferson St.

Bettendorf — The pro-life Women’s Choice Center will hold a volunteer training session Oct. 10 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 2711 Happy Joe Drive. Receptionists, data entry clerks, client advocates and general office help are needed. Call Vicki Tyler at (563) 332-0475 to reserve a spot.

Bettendorf — St. John Vianney Parish will offer an “Understanding Grief Educational Program” from 1-2:30 p.m. Oct. 6, 13, 27 and Nov. 3. There is no meeting Oct. 20. Davenport — Quad-City Right to Life will host a conversation with Jill Stanek on Oct. 29 at CASI Reception Hall, 1035 W. Kimberly Road. H’ors d’oeuvres at 6 p.m., lecture and questions at 7 p.m. The event is free. Stanek was a registered nurse at Christ Hospital in Illinois when she made the discovery that babies were being aborted alive and allowed to die without medical care. Jill went public with her discovery.

Fairfield — Jefferson County Right to Life will mark the halfway point of the 40 Days for Life campaign with a talk at 2 p.m. Oct. 11 at the Fairfield Public Library. Rachel Owen, executive director of Choices Medical Clinic in Iowa City, will speak.

RETREATS

Rock Island, Ill. — “Faith of Our Foremothers: Martyrs, Monastics, Mystics and Moms” will take place at Benet House Retreat Center, St. Mary Monastery, 2200 88th Ave. W. on Oct. 15 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Participants will get to know their blessed ancestors and the gifts they shared with the church and the world. SOCIALS

Brooklyn — St. Patrick Church will host a bazaar and supper Oct. 11. Menu includes oven-baked steak, mashed potatoes and gravy, fresh coleslaw, green beans, applesauce, homemade wheat roll, pie and drink. Supper will be served from 3:30 – 6:30 p.m. Cost is $8 for adults, $4 for children 12 and younger and $1 for  preschoolers. A baked-goods booth, country store/farmer’s market and grab-bag booth for children will open at 2 p.m. A raffle for a $100 cash prize, eight $50 cash prizes and more will take place.

Davenport —  A Theology on Tap event for young adults will take place at Phil & Larry’s Saloon Oct. 8 at 7 p.m. Deacon Dennis Duff will take questions in “Stump the Deacon.”

Grinnell — St. Mary Parish will host a fall festival Oct. 24 beginning with Mass at 4 p.m. Dinner will be served from 4:30 -7:30 p.m., and carryouts will be available. The event includes kids’ activities, hayrides, a live and silent auction and raffle.

Iowa City — A fall card party featuring an afternoon of Bridge, Euchre or Hearts will take place Oct. 11 from 1-3 p.m. at St. Mary Parish Hall, 228 E. Jefferson St. Cost is $5. Participants will enjoy a fall dessert and may win a prize. The event is sponsored by Court Craigie No. 94 of the Catholic Daughters of America.

Muscatine — The annual CDA soup supper will take place Oct. 22 from 4-7 p.m. in Gannon Hall. Menu includes chicken noodle soup, potato soup, chili, desserts and drinks. Cost is $7 for adults, $3 for children ages 5-10 and free for children younger than 5. The supper will include games for kids.

Richmond — Holy Trinity Parish’s annual fall dinner of fried chicken and pork loin will be served Sunday, Oct. 18 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Cost is $9 for adults and $3 for children ages 6-10. The event will include a country store, kolaches, hickory nuts, handcrafted items and a raffle.
