CLINTON — “Gratitude is the key that opens the door to a life marked by happiness amidst highs and lows, busyness and yearning for peace,” said Clinton Franciscan Sister Mary Smith in describing the theme of the Advent retreat she and Sister Paschal Hocum will be conducting at The Canticle, Clinton, next month.

The retreat opens Friday evening, Dec. 4, at 6:30 p.m. and continues through 4 p.m., Saturday afternoon, Dec. 5.  According to Sr. Smith, it will include “presentations, silence, creative sharing, and contemplative prayer in the quiet, beauty and renewing power of The Canticle.”

“During this Advent retreat, we will explore the wondrous GIFT of God’s coming, the meaning of Incarnation — love bending low to embrace creation in all its beauty and fragility,” said Sr. Hocum.  “We will explore ways to ‘hold ourselves in readiness’ for the grace of gratitude for the past while creating a vision for tomorrow.”

For more information or to register for the Advent retreat, call Sr. Smith at (563) 242-7609, ext. 1369.  Costs vary from $30 to $60 depending on lodging and length of stay.

“We would be happy to have retreat participants come as early at 9 a.m. Friday morning to join us for eucharistic liturgy and spend the day in quiet,” said Sr. Smith.  “It also is possible to just attend the presentations without staying the night. Scholarships are available as well,” she noted.
