Assumption graduate proud to see sports team at Mass

I am a proud graduate of Assumption High School, class of 1970. Assumption finished third in the state in the Iowa Boys Basketball Tournament this year. Its only loss was due to a last-second shot by a player from Bishop Heelan High School in Sioux City.

However, the point of my letter is not the success on the hardwood, but what I observed the day after Assumption was defeated by Heelan.

I had to remain in Des Moines for some business, and so I attended daily Mass on Friday at St. Ambrose Cathedral in downtown Des Moines. There, seated together, in their matching Assumption warm-ups with the coaching staff, were  the members of the Assumption boys’ basketball team.

As an alumnus, I was so proud to see those young men after a heartbreaking loss the night before, attending daily Mass with coaches Joe Barrer, Mark Snyder and Peter Stopulos (all Assumption alumni).

Assumption families and students are fortunate to have individuals like coaches Barrer, Snyder and Stopulos who remember that the mission of the school is not only to educate but to assist in the formation of values.
