DAVENPORT — Catholic recording artist and lay evangelist Michael John Poirier will present an evening of music, storytelling and adoration beginning at 7 p.m. July 18 at St. Paul the Apostle Parish.

“These evenings are filled with peace, healing, humor, reflection and a renewal beyond words,” Poirier said in a release. “I say this not because I am good at what I do; I say it because God is so good at what HE does!”

Poirier uses music and storytelling to set an atmosphere where it is easy to imagine God telling us how much he cherishes us, he said in a statement. Poirier will sing, tell real life stories and add a story especially for children. “The evening will flow into a time of adoration that children, older folks, Catholics and Protestants have all enjoyed at the same time.”

Poirier and his wife, Mary, travel full-time with their three children, living in an RV and homeschooling along the way. The family is beginning its fourth year on the road.

In May 2010, the Poirier family began a six week pilgrimage tour of Europe centered on Lourdes and working closely with military families and people with special needs.

Jan Di Iulio, music minister at St. Paul the Apostle Parish, said Greg and Sandi Hansen at Holy Family Parish in Davenport helped her connect with Poirier. “They have been friends and supporters of Michael’s ministry. They asked Michael to come to Davenport to sing for their daughter’s wedding. (He) performed at Holy Family Parish in Davenport last year.”

Di Iulio attended that Holy Family concert  and “experienced the presence of Christ in a very profound way” between the holy hour and music. “His music is contemporary and prayerful. The lyrics seemed to be just what I needed to hear at the time.”

When Greg Hansen asked Di Iulio if she was interested in having Poirier share his ministry in Davenport again, she accepted the challenge.

With support from St. Paul’s pastor, Father Michael Spiekermeier, and the Christian Experience Weekend board, they were able to coordinate the event.

Craig Levetzow, a member of St. Paul the Apostle Parish who also attended the concert at Holy Family, said, “Experiencing a holy hour with Michael John Poirier was incredible. Spending that much time praying in front of the Blessed Sacrament was very powerful and peaceful. Michael’s gentle songs and witness were very inspirational and drew me to open myself in prayer to Christ.”

Poirer also will sing at all Masses the weekend of July 17 and 18.

Poirier has 13 CDs to his credit. His last CD “Be with Us Today” was honored with a Unity Award in 2006 as the Devotional Album of the Year.

After the event Poirier will make selections from his music catalog — including Be With Us Today — available for a donation.

The music, storytelling and adoration event at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church is a time for young and old; singles, couples and families: an evening of song and stories for the soul.

There will be a free will offering in lieu of admission.
