Davenport — Afterglow Ministry teams meet for prayers for healing and personal needs Saturdays after 4 p.m. Mass at St. Alphonsus Church.

Melrose — The Knights of Columbus of Albia sponsor a 24-hour adoration the first Friday of the month at St. Patrick Church in Melrose. Mass begins at 8 a.m., followed by 24 hours of adoration, and closes with benediction at 9:15 a.m. on Saturday. For more information or to sign up for an hour, call Tony Humeston at (641) 932-7709.

Bettendorf — Anyone wishing to volunteer four hours or more a week at the Women’s Choice Center is invited to a training session Aug. 7 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the center. The pro-life center is located at 2711 Happy Joe Drive. Contact Vicki Tyler at (563) 332-0475.

RETREATS

Davenport — Our Lady of Victory Parish, sponsored by the Diocese of Davenport, invites people to “save the date” for the 2011 Marriage Encounter Weekend. It will be held Friday, Feb. 18, through Sunday, Feb. 20, at the church. It’s a gift married couples can give themselves to revitalize, strengthen and enrich their marriage. The cost is $95 for couples (financial assistance is available) and is open to couples of all faiths. Wheatland — The retreat “Wholeness, Holiness and the Holy Spirit” will take place Saturday, July 31, from 9:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.  at Our Lady of the Prairie Retreat. Fee is $15, which includes lunch. Participants will explore ways to be renewed in life as they pour out their life for others. They will find that balance in wholeness and holiness that deepens understanding of who people are in relationship to God and to others. Presenter is IlaMae Hanisch, MPS, a lay minister in the Catholic Church who has spent 18 years in parish ministry and 13 years with the Diocese of Davenport. Clinton — St. Edward’s Knights of Columbus Council #707 is having its annual corn boil July 25 from 3:30-7 p.m. at St. Boniface Hall. The menu includes pulled pork sandwiches, hot dogs, baked beans, all-you-can-eat sweet corn, watermelon and lemonade. The cost is $6.50 for adults and $4 for children 10 and younger. Davenport — The St. Alphonsus Parish festival will take place Saturday, Aug. 28, from 5-9 p.m. at Birchwood and Boies Ave. A pork loin dinner will be served for $6 from 5-7:30 p.m. There will also be a concession stand, children’s and adults’ games, inflatables, a huge raffle, country store and entertainment. Everyone is invited.

Garryowen — St. Patrick’s Church will celebrate a Mass of Thanksgiving on Saturday, July 24, for 170 years as a parish and also to honor parish founder Father Samuel Mazzuchelli for his beatification. The 6 p.m. Mass will be at the church, 28914 46th Ave., Bernard, Iowa. The Dominican nuns from Sinsinawa Mound, Wis., will lead the singing at Mass with their organist. Their bell choir also may perform outside church before Mass. Sister Mary Paynter, OP, vice postulator for the cause of beatification for venerable Samuel Mazzuchelli, will talk about the priest. All are invited to a free ice cream social in the hall from 4-5:30 p.m.

Goose Lake — Assumption & St. Patrick Parish in Charlotte is hosting a beef and pork dinner with all the trimmings, including a beverage and dessert, on Sunday, Aug. 8, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.  The event will be held at the Millennium Ballroom in Goose Lake.  Carryouts are available.  Cost is $8 for adults, $4 for children ages 4 to 12 and free for children 3 and younger.  There will also be a gift basket silent auction, children’s games, bingo, a country store and local entertainment.

Lovilia — St. Peter Church will celebrate the 100th anniversary of laying the cornerstone beginning with a Mass at 10:30 a.m. July 25. Afterward, guests may stay in the church for a presentation on the history of the stained-glass windows or visit the cemetery for a presentation about five of the parish’s first families and its first priest. Guests also may eat lunch in the church hall. The historical presentations will be given three times. An auction will begin at 1:30 p.m. Raffle prizes will be drawn after the auction.

Melcher — Sacred Heart Parish will hold a parish picnic Sunday, July 25 from 4-7 p.m. Hamburgers, pork burgers and hot dogs will be served, and there will be games and activities for children and adults. Freewill donations will be accepted.

Newton — Sacred Heart Parish will have a family fun night July 29 at 6 p.m. in the McCann Center. Hamburgers, hot dogs and drinks will be provided. There will be card games for adults and outdoor games for kids. Bring a potluck dish from a recipe in the parish cookbook.

Southeast Iowa — Southeast Iowa Catholic Singles will gather July 31 for Downtown After Sundown, an old-fashioned night in Bonaparte, from 7-10 p.m. For more information, call Carol at (319) 463-5585.
