Genevieve Dorothy Hirl was born in a four-room house on a farm outside of Eldridge, Iowa to the late George and Loretta Hirl. She lived in Davenport for the past 35 years, moving to Grand Haven Retirement Community in Eldridge in early 2008. She was united in marriage to John W. Brus on Feb. 24, 1938 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Davenport, and they farmed for the next 35 years in Scott County. John preceded her in death Feb. 6, 1980.

Genevieve was a member of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church. She lived most of her life on farms where she milked cows, nurtured baby animals and canned goods from her garden. She did all of this while raising seven children. She continued to make her famous strawberry preserves well into her late ‘80s, generously giving a jar of preserves away as a "thank you" for stopping by or helping her. Genevieve always saw the good in everyone she met.

Genevieve’s devotion to her family was first and foremost in her life and she cherished the time spent with them. Her strong faith helped her face many of life’s challenges. Her loving compassion, kindness and strength will forever be with us.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Genevieve’s name to the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital, 2211 N. Oak Park Avenue, Chicago, IL 60707 or St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Genevieve is survived by her children: John (Fran) Brus, James (Joyce) Brus, Patricia (Jim) Slavish, Mary (Ronald) Arp, Sally (Jim) Wolfe and Dottie Brisley; and sister, Rose DeBaets. She is also survived by her 20 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Genevieve was preceded in death by her husband, John, an infant daughter Gloria Mae Brus, her son, Donald L. Brus, a sister Cecilia Andresen and brothers Ambrose, Ed, Glenn, and Bernard Hirl. May they rest in peace.
