Gene E. Schumacher, 62, a resident of Bettendorf, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, March 23, 2011, at Genesis Medical Center West Central Park, Davenport. 

Funeral services and a Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m., Monday, March 28, 2011 at Holy Family Catholic Church, 1923 N. Fillmore Street, Davenport.  Burial will be in the National Cemetery, Rock Island Arsenal.  Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Vietnam Veterans of America, Q.C. Chapter 299.  Visitation will be Sunday from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the Halligan – McCabe – DeVries Funeral Home.  There will be a family led rosary at 5:30 p.m. that all are invited to pray.

Gene Edward Schumacher was born October 3, 1948 in Davenport a son of Leonard Anthony and Rachel Carolina (Bond) Schumacher.  He was united in marriage to Linda Susanne Jones on August 5, 1967 in Davenport at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church.

Gene retired from the former Iowa – Illinois Gas and Electric Company in 1993 after 26 years of service.  He had been a plant operator at the time he retired.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War, and was proud to have served our country.

Gene loved to spend time with his family; he especially enjoyed camping, fishing, and traveling.  He was an enthusiastic NASCAR follower. 

He was a member of Holy Family Church, an auxiliary member of the Legion of Mary, Society of Rosary Makers, and member of Gerald Timmerman Council 14678 Knights of Columbus, where he also served as membership director.

Memorials can be made to the family, or to the Gerald Timmerman Council K of C.

Survivors include his wife, Linda, a daughter and son-in-law, Amy and Jace Skaja, Davenport; and grandchildren, Anthony,  Bethany, Adrianna, Kaitlyn, Jonathan, his mother, Rachel Schumacher, Iowa City, Iowa, sisters and brothers-in-laws, Peggy and Clifford Schroder, Iowa City, Iowa, and Susan and Doug Gatchel, Mosco Mills, Missouri; in-laws, Bob and Carol Jones, Davenport, Pat and Fred Ricketts, Blue Grass, and Kathy Jones and Ken and Judy Jones, all of Davenport, and his many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Leonard, in-laws, Merle and Vera Jones, and sisters-in-law, Teresa Walljasper and Janie Huff Hoover, and a brother-in-law, Merle Jones.  May they rest in peace.
