Davenport — A Soaking With A Purpose prayer meeting will take place on Friday, Aug. 26, at 7 p.m. at Eagles’ Wings, 5816 Telegraph Road.

Davenport — “Life’s Journey — The Fruits of the Holy Spirit: A Spiritual Inventory,” parish mission will be held Aug. 20-24 at St. Paul the Apostle Parish. Father Tom Allender, SJ, will speak at Masses Aug. 20 and 21 and in the mornings and evenings of Aug. 22-24. His morning sessions begin with socials at 9 a.m. in Denning Hall followed by a talk at 9:20 a.m. in the church. Evening sessions begin with a talk at 7 p.m. in the church and social to follow at 8 p.m. in Denning Hall. Childcare is available for children under age 5 by calling (563) 322-7994 to reserve a spot. Davenport — Bishop Robert Gruss will celebrate Mass for the people of the Diocese of Davenport on Sept. 4 at 3 p.m. in Sacred Heart Cathedral.

Davenport — A healing Mass will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Cathedral Aug. 19. Confession begins at 6 p.m.; praise music begins at 6:40 p.m., and Mass will be at 7:15 p.m.

MEETINGS

Iowa City — The Diocese of Davenport Advocacy Team will meet Wednesday, Aug. 31, from 5:30-7 p.m. at St. Patrick Church. The team aims to address the root causes of poverty and injustice by educating and engaging people in the diocese to advocate for sustainable change, locally and globally. Rock Island, Ill. — “The Word Among Us” will meet at Benet House Retreat Center, 2200 88th Ave. W., two Mondays each month, beginning Aug. 29 and Sept. 12 from 7-8:30 p.m. Participants will read, reflect, pray and share with other Christians on the challenges of Scripture for everyday life. A new book will be shared each month. Presenter is Sister Charlotte Sonneville, OSB. Fee is $5 per session plus the cost of books or $50 for the series plus the cost of books.

SOCIALS

Cosgrove — Cosgrove Pork Day will take place Aug. 28 at St. Peter Church. There will be a polka Mass at 11 a.m. at the Cosgrove Institute. A pork dinner served from 11:15 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. will cost $9 for adults, $4 for children ages 2-10, and free for children younger than 2. Registration begins at 11:30 a.m. for a bean bag tournament at noon. Children’s games will be offered from noon to 3 p.m., and a kids’ tractor pull starts at 3 p.m. Live entertainment will be from noon to 1:30 p.m., and an auction will begin at 1:30 p.m. A $5,000 cash raffle will follow.

Davenport — A celebration of the one-year anniversary of the Oaks of Mamre Catholic Worker House will take place Saturday, Aug. 27, from 2-5 p.m. in Fejervary Park, 1800 W. 12th St. All are welcome; bring a dish to share. Donations to replace windows and cover taxes can be sent to Oaks Catholic Worker, 1713 W. 9th St., Davenport, IA  52804.

Davenport — A Festival of Praise, featuring the David Crowder Band with special guest Charlie Hall, will be held at 7 p.m. Sept. 3 at the LeClaire Park Bandshell, 400 W. Beiderbecke Drive. Advance tickets are $20; day of show admission is $25.  Children ages 12 and younger are admitted free. Tickets are available at Fareway stores in Davenport, Moline, Ill., and Bettendorf. Davenport — The Davenport Knights of Columbus will hold its annual Tootsie Roll drive Aug.18-21 for people with developmental disabilities. Knights, their families and other volunteers will wear yellow aprons while giving away Tootsie Rolls and asking for donations. Ninety percent of proceeds from the drive go to local community needs.

Davenport — A $1 sale per item on all school uniforms is ongoing at Cinderella Cellar, 230 W. 35 St. Dorm room items are available in the “college corner.” All proceeds benefit the Kahl Home for the Aged and Infirm in Davenport. Store hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, and 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday. For more information, call (563) 323-1923.

Grinnell — St. Mary Parish will hold a dads’ Belgian waffle breakfast Saturday, Aug. 27, from 7:30-10:30 a.m. in the religious education center. Tickets are $7 in advance from the parish office or $8 at the door. Children 5 and younger eat free. Takeouts are available.

WORKSHOPS

Iowa City — The Diocese of Davenport will present “Great Expec­tations: Coach­ing Parents to Form Their Own Children” Aug. 26 at St. Patrick Church. Faith formation leaders in parishes and schools will learn how to engage parents in forming children’s faith. Presenter will be Leisa Anslinger.  The workshop will begin with registration at 10 a.m. and end at 2:30 p.m. Registration deadline is Aug 19. Cost is $20.
