Thanks for printing the column from Deacon Frank Agnoli on the sharing of the cup in the celebration of the Eucharist (10/6/11 Catholic Messenger).
I heard indirectly some people had been confused by the article about Phoenix the week before. Can we even imagine Jesus at the Last Supper saying “Take this all of you and drink from it …” and then not sharing the cup with his friends.
In my younger days as priest whispering these words in Latin it didn’t seem so strange not to share the cup. It became much more difficult when the words were proclaimed in English. The special occasions for sharing the cup are whenever we share the eucharistic meal. That is what I told the parishioners 30 years ago when we were encouraged to share the cup.
