Artist Jill Rodts is organizing a Quad-City area sacred art show and hopes other Catholic artists will share their works for the show. The Rock Island, Ill., artist will host The Art of Faith juried Sacred Art Show and Sale in February.

"Prepare the Way -- The Light of Faith" liturgical banner by Jill Rodts. Entries for an art show are being taken now.

Cyndi Jarvis of Davenport is not a professional artist, but entered a painting for consideration. “My heart is the love of God. Art is a part of his life and mine.“This is a wonderful opportunity for me to increase my faith and artistic ability and hope the show will inspire others too,” Jarvis said.

Entries for the show are open to professional, aspiring and amateur artists. “The purpose is to share faith in the Word of God while inspiring others to see the sacred in daily life,” Rodts said.

Acceptable art includes portrayals of the Gospel message in a visual way by showing the beauty and holiness of Christ’s human and divine life. The artwork must be recognizably Catholic, appropriate for public or private devotion, children and liturgical use.

Artists can express the beauty of Christ in his birth, public ministry, passion, death and resurrection; the beauty of Our Blessed Mother, scenes of the rosary, beauty of the saints or images of biblical scenes and characters. There will be a youth corner of the exhibit for aspiring artists ages 13-18.

Jarvis said people can be scared by art. “I do spiritual direction and help people to not feel inhibited. Art can help open your mind and heart. Do not be afraid. And don’t be afraid to submit.”

In a poster for the show, one artwork depicts a liturgical banner created by Rodts titled “Prepare the Way – The Light of Faith.” Another artwork featured on the poster is “The Baptism of Christ” by Blessed Fra Angelico, who is the patron saint of artists.

Anyone interested in submitting art can send three photos of their work (which will be returned) along with the title, medium, size and a brief statement about how the artwork was created in faith and hope through prayer or why the work reflects God’s beauty. Also include your name, address and email address. The pictures can be mailed to The Art of Faith, 2502 29th Ave., Rock Island, Ill., 61201, or email submissions to jmr415@dishmail.net.

The artwork will be evaluated by a panel of three judges to select the works for the art show.

The deadline is Jan. 29. For more information, contact Rodts at (309) 787-5742.
