LECTURES

Davenport – Father John Surette, SJ, will present “Spirituality for Those Who Care for Earth” Saturday, March 10, from 7-8:30 p.m. at the Humility of Mary Center, 820 W. Central Park Ave. This includes time for discussion and homemade refreshments. Cost is free. Fr. Surette recently published “The Divine Dynamic,” a book of reflections on the relationship between humans, the Earth, and the creative power of the universe.

Davenport — On Wednesday, Feb. 29, at 7 p.m., St. Ambrose University will host a public lecture by Lan Samantha Chang, award-winning author and director of the University of Iowa Writer’s Workshop. “Writing Fiction as a Chinese-American” will take place in the Rogalski Center.

Clinton — The Sisters of St. Francis invite the public to join them at vespers – evening prayer – on the Sundays of Lent at The Canticle. The 45-minute prayer services will begin at 6 p.m. each Sunday beginning Feb. 26 and continuing March 4, 11, 18 and 25, and April 1.

Davenport — A Soaking With a Purpose Prayer meeting will take place Feb. 24 at 7 p.m. at Eagles’ Wings.

RETREATS

Clinton – Prince of Peace Parish will hold a Christian Experience Weekend March 2-4 for men at Prince of Peace Catholic School. Fee is $35. Persons unable to pay are not refused. Cosgrove – The annual Cosgrove Blood Drive will take place at St. Peter’s Church Hall March 8 from 3-7 p.m. St. Peter’s Altar and Rosary Society will help sponsor this cause. For appointments, contact Trish Rohret at (319) 545-2086 or trish@southslope.net.

Clinton – St. Edwards Council of the Knights of Columbus will hold fish fries at St. Boniface Hall from 4:30-7 p.m. for six Fridays, Feb. 24 to March 30. Cost is $9 for seven jumbo shrimp, $8 for adults, $4 for children 3-12 and free for children younger than 3. Carry-outs will be available by calling (563) 242-0902.

Iowa City — Knights of Columbus Council 842 will hold dinners of catfish, shrimp or salmon Fridays during Lent from 5-7 pm at the KC Family Center.  Kids’ meals will be available.  For more information, call (319) 341-9097.

Lone Tree – St. Mary parishes of Lone Tree and Nichols will host a joint pancake breakfast March 4 from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Lone Tree American Legion. Cost is $6 for adults, $3 for children ages 6-12 and free for children 5 and younger.

Mount Pleasant – A community card party will take place Tuesday, March 6, from 1-4 p.m. at St. Alphonsus Church. Participants will play Euchre, Pitch, Bridge, Canasta and other games.

Preston – The Altar & Rosary Society of Ss. Mary & Joseph Parish in Sugar Creek will hold an omelet and pancake breakfast Feb. 26 from 7 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Preston Town Hall.  There also will be a bake sale and silent auction.

Richland – Ss. Joseph & Cabrini Parish will hold a soup supper on Sunday, March 4, from 4-7 p.m. at Mother Cabrini Hall. Chili, vegetable soup and chicken noodle soup will be served with pie, beverages and relishes for a freewill offering.  Cards will be played following supper. There will also be a country store.

Washington – The first St. James Parish celebrity soup cook-off will take place Feb. 25 in Tobin Hall after 5:30 p.m. Mass. Proceeds will support the charity Mary’s Meals.

West Liberty — St. Joseph’s Knights of Columbus will hold fish fries at St. Joseph’s Parish Life Center on March 2, 16 and 30 from 5-7:30 p.m. Cost is $9.50 for adults and $4.50 for people younger than 13.

WORKSHOPS

Wheatland – A Cool Congregations workshop will take place Saturday, March 3, from 1–4 p.m. at Our Lady of the Prairie Retreat. Participants will learn how to measure and reduce their carbon footprint, and how to organize a Cool Congregations program in their faith community. Cost is $25.
