Volunteer program continues

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

The people of the Diocese of Davenport have supported mission and evangelization work in Central and South America since 1960 when Bishop Ralph Hayes first appointed Father Louis Colonnese as the Diocesan Lay Volunteer Representative in Latin America. For the last 15 years, Msgr. W. Robert Schmidt has enthusiastically directed the dedicated volunteers and benefactors in support of the program.
What Fr. Colonnese said in 1986 is still very true today:  “Thousands upon thousands of the very poor have been ministered to through qualified teachers, nurses and other volunteers who have been sent through the Davenport Diocese program.  Those in the diocese who have supported this program with their material contributions and their prayers have responded to Jesus in Mt 25:40 (‘whatever you do for one of these you do for me’).”
I am convinced now more than ever that there remain incredible outstanding needs for our poor and vulnerable brothers and sisters living in Latin America.  We need to continue to support those among us doing mission and evangelization work and encourage the next generation to do likewise.
Please join me in praying for continued success of the Volunteer Program; for guidance and leadership for newly appointed program director, Kent Ferris; and for new volunteers and benefactors in order that the program can continue for years to come.
