Patrick Leo Greiner, 73 years of age from Keota, IA, was married to Shirley Haack for 49 years (whom met at a Harper Dance) and has three children (Kimberly, Sidney, and Ted Greiner). Pat attended grade school at St. Peter and Paul elementary, Keota High School, and St. Ambrose College. Patrick was in the army reserve for 8 years after college but his true love was farming. After the reserve he started farming crops and livestock (mainly sheep) on the farm where he was born and raised.
Some accomplishments of Pat’s were the following:
All-State football player
· Serving on the Board of Directors at the COOP for fifteen years
· Serving on the Iowa Sheep and Wool Promotion and the Iowa Sheep Industry Association boards. (served as chairman on both boards). Also, was on American Sheep Industry Board
· Member of the Iowa Farm Bureau Advisory Committee
· Served on the parish councils for St. Peter and Paul Church and Holy Trinity Parish
· 4-H leader (Dutch Creek Flyers) for thirty years.
· 4-H Hall of Fame
· Served on the Washington County fair board where he was the sheep department superintendent for years
· The 2012 Iowa Sheep Industry Assoc. dedicated the festival to him in honor of his services
· Grill Master at the Iowa State Fair’s Sheep Industry Food Booth
For many years Pat enjoyed showing sheep throughout the years with his family which led to him
raising sheep with his sons and then watching his grand kids show. Hobbies of his where talking on the phone with grandkids and finding the Hawkeye scores of any event, watching grandkids activities, dancing, playing cards, Kalona sale barn on sheep sale day, bridge club (member of a very special bridge club for 38 years), dinner dates w/ special friends, crop checking, antique shopping, camping (Beginning w/ a very, very small camper), raising chickens (when he was a kid and then at the age of 70…difference being that at 70 he had a GREAT chicken house), bowling, traveling (in state and abroad), creating items with sheep products such as making woolen Christmas trees and grilling leg-a-lamb for special occasions and most of all spending time with his grandkids (Stetsen, Sterling, Brooke, Garrett, Sawyer, and Ella) whom he loved very much. His daughters-in-law (Mary and Wendy) say his personality was very sociable and got to know everyone personally. He was a very kind, loving and giving man who spoke softly. When they entered the family, they noticed his interesting love of ketchup and different combinations it could have. His immediate family (Living: Carol, Dr. Tom, Tim, Jerome, Dr. Rex and Deceased: MaryAnn, Theodore, Bonnie) looked up to him as not only a brother but as a friend and a mentor. Pat’s Father (Leo) and Mother (Marvel) whom are deceased had a large influence on him growing up. Through them he learned to be a devoted Catholic, hard worker and a sharp dresser. They pushed him to go to college and play football. He will be GREATLY missed by all whom knew him!
Pat died on June 26, 2012 at his home, near Keota at the age of 73 years.
Celebration of Life Service will be held on 10:30 AM on Monday, July 1, 2012 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Sigourney. Fr. Charles Fladung will officiate. Burial will be in the Ss. Peter & Paul Cemetery, Harper. There will be a luncheon in Keota at Holy Trinity St. Mary’s Hall. Visitation will be on Sunday from 3-7 PM at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Sigourney.
