Persons, places and things: Check out the E-edition

Today’s Catholic Messenger is being delivered to subscribers in two different ways: the print edition you’re accustomed to seeing in your mailbox and a brand new E-edition that you can view online. Each is an exact replica of the other, but the E-edition has at least one advantage: all of us can receive our Catholic Messenger at the same time on Thursdays wherever we live in the Davenport Diocese or around the world.
While many of us still enjoy holding the Messenger in our hands and reading it, others prefer to read electronically on their laptops, iPads, tablets, smart phones or other mobile devices.
For the next two months, until Dec. 1, we’re providing our E-edition for free so that you can see whether that’s the way you would like to receive your Catholic Messenger. You could also opt to receive both the print edition and E-edition for the same low price.
Check it out at http://digital.catholicmessenger.net/
Some of the things I enjoy most about the E-edition are the vibrant colors in the photos and advertisements, the built-in sound of pages turning, the newspaper’s searchable features and the ease in moving from page to page. The E-edition is also ecologically friendly because there’s no paper to throw out or recycle. If you want to save articles, you can save them in your computer.
On Dec. 1, you’ll have the opportunity to sign up for the E-edition by providing us with your email address. Send it to our circulation manager Nancy Hamerlinck at Hamerlinck@davenportdiocese.org.
When it is time for you to renew, the cost will be $29 for the E-edition whether you live in the diocese or in another state. If you’d like to receive both the E-edition and the print edition and you live in our diocese, you pay just $29. If you live outside the diocese and want to receive both the print and E-edition, you’ll pay $31. For subscribers wishing to start a subscription using PayPal, the E-edition will cost $31 because of the cost of providing that convenient service.
Some of you may be wondering why we’re offering an E-edition when we have a website that includes a number of our stories from the print edition. Good question! The website has a different feel and look than the newspaper and once we begin our E-edition, the traditional website will offer the first couple of paragraphs of stories and any additional content that didn’t fit in the newspaper. Our hope is that visitors to our website will want to read more and decide to purchase a subscription to the E-edition.
Many newspapers have turned to the E-edition format to attract readers who’ve become accustomed to getting their news on the Internet and want easy access to that news.
What we’re attempting to do is no different than what St. Paul did when he wrote letters to the Corinthians, Ephesians, Thessalonians and other communities in the infancy of the Church. We’re communicating with the media tools of the times.

  1. I really enjoy reading the Cathoic Messager on my IPad. I do subscribe to the Messenger. Not sure I would have it on my iPad.
