Funeral services and a Mass of Christian Burial for Mary Jayne Hughes, 89, a resident of Davenport, will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, March 18, 2013 at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, Davenport.  Burial will take place in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Davenport.  Visitation will be Sunday from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. at the Halligan McCabe DeVries Funeral Home, downtown Davenport.  There will be additional visitation from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the Mass in the gathering space at the church.  Mrs. Hughes died Wednesday, March 13, 2013 at Trinity, Bettendorf after a brief illness.

Mary Jayne Block was born on November 23, 1923 in Moline, IL, a daughter of John F. and Alma E. (Zinger) Block.  She was united in marriage to William C. Hughes on September 25, 1948 at St. Paul the Apostle, Davenport.  He preceded her in death on November 2, 1998.  They celebrated 50 years of marriage together.

Mary Jayne worked as a secretary and bookkeeper at Fejervary Health Care Center, Davenport for many years.  She was a member and past president of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 26.  She has been a member of St. Paul’s Parish for the past 85 years, and part of their Altar and Rosary Society, church choir, and assisted with funeral luncheons.  Mary Jayne was also active in the Daughters of Isabella and the Quad City Plus 60 Club.

Memorials may be made to St. Paul the Apostle Church.

Mary Jayne is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, John C. Hughes, Davenport, Michael J. and Theresa Hughes, Grand Mound, Iowa, Mark W. Hughes, Pleasant Valley, Jeffery J. and Audrey Hughes, Phoenix, and Gary C. Hughes, Davenport, seven grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

Mary Jayne was preceded in death by her husband and parents.  May they rest in peace.
