DAVENPORT — Alumni of St. Mary’s Grade School are celebrating an all-class reunion Sunday, April 21, at St. Anthony Parish from 1-4 p.m. Tours of St. Mary Church and the former school will be from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. before the reunion. The event is free.
St. Mary’s School opened in 1902 at Sixth and Fillmore streets. It was heralded as a modern school staffed by the Sisters of Holy Cross and in later years by lay teachers. The school was identified many times for its outstanding students’ programs, recitals and plays, the alumni committee said. The school’s students became leaders of the community and elsewhere and remain active citizens and church members today.
The school’s name changed to Holy Trinity in the 1960s when St. Mary School combined with St. Joseph School in Davenport. St. Mary School building is used today as a center for many activities.
The alumni committee commends those who “came before us for their vision and foresight and their leadership of yesterday and today. Their dedication and commitment strengthened our Catholic education and prepared us for our future lives. We are proud of our past and want to honor our former church and school.”
Pictures, news articles and programs from 1902 to 1974 have been collected for a pictorial to honor the pastors, priests, teachers and students connected to the school and the bishops who served the Davenport Diocese during those years.
More than 1,000 pictures have been collected with nearly as many articles on the happenings of the students of St. Mary’s. A pictorial of St. Mary’s history will be available (on CD) for purchase; proceeds will provide an endowment for Catholic grade school and high school education. The pictorial tells the story of the legacy of St. Mary’s Church and School.
Reminiscing and sharing of heart-warming stories will be the focus of the reunion as participants reflect on their hopes and dreams from when they were students at St. Mary.
