The Iowa Legislature adjourned May 23, ending the 2013 session of the 85th General Assembly. During the final days, the legislature completed work on the state budget and several other policy items of interest.
House File 625, which includes an increase in the School Tuition Organization (STO) tax credits to $12 million, passed the Senate on a 49-0 vote and the House on a 96-0 vote. HF 625 makes it possible for STOs to offer tax credits for limited liability corporations and other types of business corporations in 2013. The increase in tax credits to $12 million takes effect in calendar year 2014. The bill goes to the governor. These tax credits help raise money for scholarships so low-income students can attend a Catholic or other nonpublic school.
