EDUCATIONAL
Iowa City – The Diocese of Davenport invites pastoral leaders to the 2013 August Gathering, “Building Bridges,” at St. Patrick Church Aug. 16. The event will explore how to engage people in living the faith, coach parents and form the family. Guest speaker will be Leisa Anslinger. Registration begins at 9:45 a.m., and the first session begins at 10 a.m. Closing is at 2:45 p.m. Cost is $25 (includes lunch). Registration deadline is Aug. 9. LITURGY/PRAYER
Burlington — Bishop Martin Amos will celebrate a special Year of Faith Mass with Keokuk Deanery priests on Saturday, July 20, at 5 p.m. in Burlington Memorial Auditorium. Food and games will follow after the liturgy. Regular Saturday evening Masses in the deanery are cancelled on this date.
Davenport —  A healing Mass will be celebrated July 19 at Sacred Heart Cathedral. Confessions start at 6 p.m., praise music at 6:30 p.m., and Mass at 7:15 p.m.
MEETINGS
Moline, Ill. – The Secular Discalced Carmelite Community of St. Joseph and the Prophet Elijah invites people to join in the study of prayer in the tradition of St. Teresa of Avila and St. John of the Cross. RETREATS
Wheatland —  Our Lady of the Prairie Retreat invites people to the following events. On Aug. 4 at 5 p.m. is a Taize Vigil Service. Taize is an ecumenical movement, drawing Christians of all denominations together in prayer. Supper follows. Free will offering. On Aug. 7 from 10 a.m. to noon is a mini-retreat with Mass at 10 a.m. and a variety of programs. Come early, stay late, and enjoy lunch from the Prairie garden. Fee: $8. On Aug. 8 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. is Knit One, Pray Too! Bring yarn. Fee: $20, includes lunch. SOCIALS
Clinton – Knights of Columbus St. Edwards Council 707 will hold a corn boil on Sunday, July 28, at St. Boniface Hall, 2520 Pershing Blvd., from 3:30—7:30 p.m. Menu includes pulled pork sandwiches and hot dogs. A bake sale will be hosted by the Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary. Cost is $7 for adults and $4 for children ages 4-10.
Davenport – The Congregation of the Humility of Mary presents “Women & Spirit: Catholic Sisters in America,” a professional museum exhibit highlighting the historical contributions of  women’s religious communities of the Upper Mississippi River Valley. In addition, archival treasures from the Sisters of Humility will be on display. The exhibit will be open for public viewing at Humility of Mary Center, 820 West Central Park Ave., from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on July 21. Guests are welcome to 10 a.m. Mass prior to viewing the exhibit.
Davenport – The 2013 Fr. Ken Martin Golf Outing & Dinner will be held Aug. 28 at Emeis Golf Course at 12:30 p.m., followed by dinner at the Knights of Columbus Hall. Proceeds go to the Assumption Foundation for K-12 Catholic Schools to provide an emergency scholarship fund for families in crisis situations. Davenport — St. Ambrose University invites high school and transfer students and their families to Iowa Private College Week, Aug. 5-9. Campus tours and free informational sessions about the admissions process and financial aid will be held twice daily, beginning at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Current students, faculty and staff will share insights about academic programs and campus life. East Pleasant Plain — Father Robert “Bob” Striegel, sacramental minister of Ss. Joseph & Cabrini in Richland/ East Pleasant Plain and a chaplain at the VA hospital in Iowa City, will celebrate the 40th anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood with a Mass Sunday, July 21, at 3 p.m.  at the church, 1174 Reed St.,  East Pleasant Plain. Springbrook – Ss. Peter & Paul Parish will hold a chicken barbecue July 21. Mass is at 10:15 a.m. with country Gospel singers. Meal is from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Cost is $9 for a half chicken serving, $8 for a quarter chicken and free for children 5 and younger. Auction is at 1 p.m., and a drawing for prizes is at 6 p.m.
