CONFERENCES
Iowa City — The Diocese of Davenport’s Catholic Young Adult Network invites 18-39-year-olds to its second annual young adult conference, “Called and Chosen,” on Saturday, Sept. 28 at St. Patrick Church, Iowa City, from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The day will include two keynote presentations from John Donahue-Grossman, breakout sessions, opportunities for eucharistic adoration and reconciliation, and Mass. Cost is $20 (includes lunch). Registration deadline is  Sept. 16. EDUCATIONAL
Cedar Rapids – Teresa Downing-Matibag, executive director of the Network Against Human Trafficking, will lead a human trafficking workshop at Mount Mercy University Aug. 29 from 2-4:30 p.m. at Betty Cherry Heritage Hall. The presentation aims to help participants prevent trafficking in their communities, identify potential trafficking activity, collaborate with law enforcement through effective reporting, and contribute to anti-trafficking legislation. RETREATS
Davenport – St. Alphonsus Parish invites people to a day of retreat with Father Bob Miller on Sept. 9 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with services at 3 p.m.  The retreat is titled: “Journeying with Jesus through Human Desires and Holy Longings” and will take place in the church and St. Clements Hall. Wheatland – The annual “Spirit of the Prairie” retreat is Aug. 25 from 3–6 p.m.  at Our Lady of the Prairie Retreat, 2664 145th Ave. The event includes local food, wine, beers and entertainment, tours and a silent auction of gift baskets. Cost is $40 per person. Proceeds benefit The Prairie Retreat scholarship fund. Parking and shuttle service will be available at the Humility of Mary Center in Davenport. Wheatland —  Our Lady of the Prairie Retreat invites people to the following events. On Sept. 1 at 5 p.m. is a Taize Vigil Service, with supper following. Freewill offerings will be accepted. Bettendorf – The Women’s Choice Center will host a Mug & Muffin informational meeting for potential volunteers on Tuesday, Sept. 24 from 10 a.m. to noon.  Call Julie at (563) 332-0475 to reserve a spot.
Cosgrove — St. Peter’s Cosgrove Pork Day is Sunday, Aug. 25. Schedule is 11 a.m.: polka Mass (inside St. Peter Church); 11:15 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.: Altar and Rosary meal (featuring pork burgers and pork loin); noon – 1:30 p.m.: bingo and paddle wheel (in the beer tent); noon – 3 p.m.: children’s games and train rides; 1:30 p.m.: auction; 2 p.m.: children’s money in the straw; 2:30 p.m.: children’s tractor pull registration; and 3 p.m.: children’s tractor pull. Following the auction is the Altar and Rosary raffle with a $5,000 cash drawing.
Davenport – The Sacred Heart Cathedral Knights of Columbus will sponsor a Grill and Chill following 4 p.m. Mass Saturday, Aug. 24. Suggested donations of $8-10 will support new bathrooms, gathering space and diocesan hall. All are welcome.
Davenport – People are invited to help initiate the fire pit at Eagles’ Wings at 6 p.m. Aug. 23 with a cook-out and pot blessing. Bring your own meat to put on the grill or a hot dog and fork and a dish to pass. Eagles’ Wings will provide table service. Plan to roast marshmallows and sing. Bring a lawn chair and roasting fork.
Davenport – Quad Cities Interfaith will hold a trivia night fundraiser at the Knights of Columbus Hall (first floor), 1111 W. 35th St. on Saturday, Sept. 7. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.; the event starts at 7 p.m. Cost is $10 per person or $80 for a table of eight. There will be a 50/50 raffle and basket raffle. Davenport – The St. Alphonsus Parish Festival at Birchwood and Boies avenues will be Saturday, Aug. 24, from 5-9 p.m. A pork loin dinner from 5-7:30 p.m. will cost $7. There will be a concession stand, games for children and adults, inflatables, a raffle, country store and entertainment.
Davenport – A raffle to support youth scholarships and education programs, continued education, mission trips and youth ministry is under way at St. Anthony Parish. The drawing will be Aug. 25 with the grand prize being a 2013 SRT Viper coupe or $100,000 cash. Tickets are $125 each or three for $300. For an order form, visit www.stanthonysdavenportiowa.org. Davenport – The 2013 Fr. Ken Martin Golf Outing & Dinner will be held Aug. 28 at Emeis Golf Course at 12:30 p.m., followed by dinner at the Knights of Columbus Hall. Pro­ceeds go to the Assum­ption Foundation for K-12 Catholic Schools to provide an emergency scholarship fund for families in crisis situations. DeWitt – St. Joseph Parish will hold its Fall Festival Sunday, Sept. 15 from 3–7 p.m. A beef and pork dinner will cost $9 for adults and $5 for children ages 6-12. Carry-outs are available: call (563) 659-3514, ext. 124 after 1 p.m. the day of the festival. The event includes bingo, a raffle, bake sale, pop walk, farmers market, children’s games and silent auction.
Georgetown – St. Patrick Parish will celebrate the annual God’s Portion Day on Labor Day weekend, Aug. 31 and Sept. 1. On Saturday is the fourth annual Georgetown Open Golf Tourney, 8:45 a.m. check-in at Albia Country Club; 9:30 a.m. shotgun start. Call (641) 777-9687 to pre-register by Aug. 26. Sunday schedule: 10 a.m. Mass in the historic church; 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., country homegrown dinner with roast beef/chicken; 11:30 a.m., country store, kids games; noon to 4 p.m., silent auction under the tent; 1:30 p.m., live auction on south lawn; 4 p.m., lawn social (sandwiches and beverages served), auction continues; souvenirs, raffle, Irish and religious items available.
Petersville – Imm­ac­ulate Conception Parish invites people to a beef and pork dinner on Sunday, Aug. 25, with serving from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Cost is $8 for adults and $5 for children. Carry-outs will be available. The event includes a country store and raffle.
