CONFERENCES
Iowa City — The Diocese of Davenport’s Catholic Young Adult Network invites 18-39-year-olds to its second annual young adult conference, “Called and Chosen,” on Saturday, Sept. 28 at St. Patrick Church, Iowa City, from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The day will include two keynote presentations from John Donahue-Grossman, breakout sessions, opportunities for eucharistic adoration and reconciliation, and Mass. Davenport – A healing Mass will be celebrated at Eagles’ Wings at 1 p.m. Sept. 10.
Davenport – Soaking With a Purpose prayer meetings will take place at Eagles’ Wings on Sept. 13 and 27 at 7 p.m.
MEETINGS
Bettendorf – An Understanding Grief Educational Program for people who’ve lost a loved one will take place at St. John Vianney Church in the Vianney Room for seven Tuesdays beginning Sept. 24 from 1-2:30 p.m. Presenter is Gail Votroubek of Genesis Hospice Ber­ea­vement. Davenport – The Grief Support Group at St. Anthony Parish will start a nine-week program on Oct. 1. The group meets on Tuesdays from 3:30–5 p.m. at the school library at the far end of the church parking lot. People of any faith background who are grieving the loss of a loved one are invited. RETREATS
Davenport – Eagles’ Wings will offer a retreat day, “My Beautiful One,” on Sept. 6 from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. This silent, directed retreat will focus on “The lover and his beloved” using the spirituality of St. Ignatius of Loyola. There will be creative art, journaling, and group sharing. Bring a Bible, journal and sack lunch. Registration is $35: call Cyndi at (563) 323-9945.
Davenport – St. Alphonsus Parish invites people to a day of retreat with Father Bob Miller on Sept. 9 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with services at 3 p.m.  The retreat is titled: “Journeying with Jesus through Human Desires and Holy Longings” and will take place in the church and St. Clements Hall. Coralville – Mothers of Young Children (MOYC) invites moms to its 2013-14 kickoff event: a social mixer on Sept. 10 from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at St. Thomas More Church. Participants will learn more about MOYC and be able to enroll as a member for $20. MOYC is a ministry for Iowa City area Catholic women with children kindergarten age or younger. Davenport – A bus trip to Sinsinawa, Wis., will honor the venerable Father Samuel Mazzuchelli, who helped build St. Anthony Church. Travelers will learn about his pilgrimage from Milan, Italy, to the Upper Mississippi River Valley, where he founded more than 20 churches. The bus tour leaves St. Anthony’s at 8 a.m. Sept. 18 and returns by 6 p.m. The trip includes visits to the Dominican Sisters’ museum and rosary chapel in Sinsinawa; St. Augustine Church in New Diggings, Wis.; and St. Patrick Church in Benton, Wis. Davenport – Quad Cities Interfaith will hold a trivia night fundraiser at the Knights of Columbus Hall (first floor), 1111 W. 35th St. on Saturday, Sept. 7. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.; the event starts at 7 p.m. Cost is $10 per person or $80 for a table of eight. There will be a 50/50 raffle and basket raffle. DeWitt – St. Joseph Parish will hold its Fall Festival Sunday, Sept. 15 from 3–7 p.m. A beef and pork dinner will cost $9 for adults and $5 for children ages 6-12. Carry-outs are available: call (563) 659-3514, ext. 124 after 1 p.m. the day of the festival. The event includes bingo, a raffle, bake sale, pop walk, farmers market, children’s games and silent auction.
East Pleasant Plain – Ss. Joseph & Cabrini Parish invites people to its annual bazaar on Sept. 15. Mass is at 9:30 a.m. A buffet dinner with chicken and pork loin is from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Cost is $8 for adults, $3.50 for children ages 3 to 12 years, and free for children younger than 3. A large auction starts at 1 p.m. The day includes a country store, crafts, baked goods, a raffle, Larry’s Horse & Carriage rides, silent auction, kids’ games and a caramel apple booth.
Mechanicsville – St. Mary Parish will hold its annual ice cream social and country store on Sept. 22 in the parish hall from 4-6:30 p.m. Cost is $6 for adults, $4 for children and free for children 3 and younger. A meal will be served. The event includes crafts, baked goods and a quilt raffle.
Riverside — St. Mary Parish invites people to its annual Labor Day celebration Sept. 2.  Food will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. A smoked Iowa chop dinner will cost $10 in advance or $11 at the door; a fried chicken dinner will cost $9 in advance or $10 at the door. A hot dog kids’ meal will cost $5 in advance or $6 at the door. Children younger than 5 get a free kids’ meal. To order tickets in advance, call (319) 648-4149. Carryouts will be available. A raffle will offer a grand prize of $1,500. Festivities include crafts, a farmers’ market, bingo, deer shoot, kids’ games, obstacle course and a 1 p.m. tractor pull (sign up at 12:30 p.m.) An auction will offer quilts, stained glass, pews for Christmas Eve Mass and more.
Sigourney – St. Mary Parish’s fall festival is Sept. 15 at St. Mary Hall. A smoked pork chop meal – hamburger or chicken for kids – will be served from 4-7 p.m. Cost is $10 at the door or $5 for children 5 and younger. Carry-outs will be available. Raffle tickets for a hand-made quilt are $1 for one, $5 for six or $10 for 12. Tickets for a cash/gift card drawing are $5. Day includes children’s games. St. Mary Sampler cookbooks will be on sale for $15 at the door.
Solon – St. Mary Parish will hold its Harvest Festival on Sept. 22. A pork and chicken dinner will be served from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Cost is $10 for adults and $6 for children ages 6-12. Purchase tickets at weekend Masses, the parish office or at the door. Carry-outs will be available. The day includes children’s and family activities, a country store, silent auction. There will be a raffle with a first prize of a Kinnick Stadium suite for Oct. 26. Raffle tickets cost $5 each or five for $20.
