Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:
October is Respect Life Month. The Church calls for special attention and reflection on this year’s theme — Open Your Hearts to Life! — which has been a favorite theme of Pope Francis and one that has particular urgency today as the “culture of death” is gaining an ever wider foothold.
Catholics are called in a special way to reflect on the gift of human life, the threats against it and how we can protect all persons from conception to natural death. We are called to be mindful of the risks to basic religious liberties and freedoms. And we recall the true meaning of love — love that always seeks the good of the other person despite the personal cost.
The goal of banishing all forms of violence flows from the love and celebration of the life with which our Creator’s love has endowed us. Created as we are in God’s own image we should build a world where human life is always loved and protected. In the homily of his inaugural Mass, Pope Francis said that St. Joseph reminds us of the “core of the Christian vocation, which is Christ! Let us protect Christ in our lives, so that we can protect others, so that we can protect creation!”
The sacredness of the life of human beings is violated when the life of the unborn is threatened; when children live in fear, poverty, hunger and abuse; when the spiritual, physical and emotional needs of the elderly and disabled are neglected; and when millions who live in refugee camps, in prison, in war zones and in disease are deprived of their God-given human dignity. We are all precious gifts from God.
There are no simple solutions, but there is guidance and support. The U.S. bishops have assembled a Respect Life package that many parishes have ordered, and information on the Respect Life program can be accessed through the Diocese of Davenport website at http://www.davenportdiocese.org/socialaction/sarespectlife.htm. This October, please join me in reflecting on the sacredness of every human being so that we may each be a sign of God’s love to each other.
Respeto por la vida
Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo:
Octubre es el mes dedicado al respeto por la vida. La Iglesia nos pide que le pongamos especial atención y reflexionemos sobre el tema de este año — Ábranle el Corazón a la Vida — uno de los temas favoritos del Papa Francisco y que cobra especial urgencia en nuestros días en que la “cultura de la muerte” está ganando terreno.
A los católicos les compete de manera especial reflexionar sobre el don de la vida humana, los peligros que la amenazan y cómo podemos proteger a todas las personas desde la concepción hasta la muerte natural. Se nos llama a estar pendientes de los riesgos a la libertad religiosa y otras libertades. Y podemos traer a la mente el verdadero sentido del amor — amor que siempre busca el bien del otro a pesar del costo que bien puede ser personal.
La meta de desterrar la violencia en todas sus expresiones se deriva del amor y celebración de la vida con la que el Creador ha tenido a bien dotarnos. Ya que hemos sido creados a imagen y semejanza de Dios deberíamos construir un mundo donde la vida humana siempre sea amada y protegida. En la homilía de su Misa inaugural, el Papa Francisco dijo que S. José nos recuerda “la esencia de la vocación cristiana que es Cristo! ¡Protejamos a Cristo en nuestra vida, para así poder proteger a otros, y proteger la creación!”
Cuando la vida de los que están todavía por nacer se ve amenazada, se está violando la santidad de la vida humana; también es así cuando hay niños y niñas que viven con miedo, en pobreza, hambrientos y abusados; cuando no se atienden las necesidades espirituales, físicas y emocionales de las personas mayores y los descapacitados; y cuando a millones que viven refugiados, encarcelados, en zonas de guerra y presa de enfermedades no se les reconoce la dignidad humana de que han sido dotados por su Creador. Todos somos regalos de Dios de inestimable valor.
