Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
The first national collection for the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS) will be held on Nov. 9-10, 2013. This special collection will be held once every three years to support the AMS which is the only arm of the Church responsible for supplying priests to serve as chaplains in the U.S. military around the world. Seven of our active and retired diocesan priests serve as chaplains for the AMS.
Now is a time of great transition for our Catholic brothers and sisters serving in the United States military. While many are home with their families in the wake of troop withdrawals from the Middle East, others remain on the front lines to face a scattered but determined enemy. Those still deployed endure ongoing adversity, sacrifice and danger. Those back home confront major life adjustments — always aware they could be called back to action at any time, as are others who have yet to experience combat. Facing so many kinds of hardship, these Catholics in uniform rely on the priests who serve as military chaplains for spiritual support, guidance in faith and access to the sacraments.
This collection offers each of us a substantial way to “serve those who serve.” Funds raised will help the AMS and its endorsed priests bring the Church’s full range of pastoral services to the men and women in uniform as well as their families and patients in the nation’s VA Medical Centers. They will support religious education in remote locations, priestly formation of new chaplains at a time of critical shortage and financial planning to meet the challenges of shepherding a global archdiocese that is present wherever U.S. military personnel are stationed.

Apoyo para los capellanes militares
Queridos Hermanos y Hermanas en Cristo,
Del 9 al 10 noviembre de 2013 se llevará a cabo la Primera Colecta Nacional de la Arquidiócesis para los Servicios Militares, que servirá para sostener la Pastoral Castrense de los Estados Unidos (AMS, por sus siglas en inglés). Esta colecta especial se realizará una vez cada tres años para apoyar la Misión de la Pastoral Castrense, que es la única ayuda que recibe la Iglesia encargada de enviar capellanes al ejército de los Estados Unidos alrededor del mundo. En este momento, siete de nuestros activos y jubilados sacerdotes diocesanos ayudan como capellanes del AMS.
Ahora es un tiempo de gran transición para nuestros hermanos y hermanas católicos que pertenecen a la milicia de los Estados Unidos. Mientras que muchos están en casa con sus familias a raíz del retiro de las tropas de Medio Oriente, otros aún permanecen en primera línea; para hacer frente a cualquier eventualidad. Los que todavía están allá, soportan la adversidad, el sacrificio y el peligro continuamente; y los que vuelven a casa enfrentan importantes cambios en sus vidas — siempre conscientes de que en cualquier momento podrían ser llamados a la acción, al igual que otros que aún no han experimentado el combate. Ante tantos tipos de dificultades, estos católicos uniformados, se apoyan en los sacerdotes, que sirven como capellanes militares y que dan a estos hermanos y hermanas apoyo espiritual, orientación en la fe y les brindan los sacramentos.
Esta colecta nos invita a cada uno de nosotros de manera particular a “ayudar a los que sirven”. Los fondos recaudados apoyarán a la Misión Pastoral Castrense de la Arquidiócesis para los Servicios Militares y, también, a sus sacerdotes comprometidos, que realizan todos los servicios religiosos de la Iglesia no sólo a los hombres y mujeres de uniforme, sino también a sus familias y a los pacientes atendidos en los Centros Médicos de la nación. Esta ayuda permitirá la educación religiosa en lugares remotos, la formación sacerdotal de nuevos capellanes para los momentos de gran necesidad y, para la planificación financiera, destinada en todo momento a asumir los retos de un apostolado global de la Arquidiócesis, que está presente, allí donde quiera que se encuentren los militares estadounidenses.
