Bishop to ordain three to priesthood, two to diaconate June 7

DAVENPORT — Three men will be ordained to the priesthood and two to the diaconate for the Diocese of Davenport on June 7 at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Cathedral.
Deacons Kevin Anstey, Robert Cloos and Christopher Young will be ordained priests at the Mass, which will be celebrated by Bishop Martin Amos. In addition, seminarians Bill Roush and Guillermo Trevino will take another step toward the priesthood by being ordained deacons.

Dcn. Anstey

Deacon Anstey, 29, graduated from Conception Seminary in Conception, Mo., with a BA in philosophy and completed his theology studies at Mundelein Seminary in Mundelein, Ill., with a Master of Divinity.

Prior to entering the seminary he studied engineering and worked in agriculture, sewer repair, millwright work and as a test mechanic for agriculture machinery.
Deacon Anstey completed his clinical pastoral education at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, Mo., in 2011. He completed internships at Ss. Mary & Mathias Parish in Muscatine in 2010; Holy Trinity Parish in Richmond, St. Mary Parish in Riverside and St. Joseph Parish in Wellman; and Ss. John & Paul Parish in Burlington in 2012; and St. Alphonsus Parish in Dav­enport in 2013.

He was ordained a deacon at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Davenport on July 13, 2013.

Deacon Anstey plans to celebrate his first Mass as a priest on June 7 at the 5 p.m. Mass at St. Patrick Church in Ottumwa.

Dcn. Cloos

Deacon Cloos, 56, graduated from Western State Colorado University with a Bachelor of Arts in finance and a minor in accounting. He completed his theology studies and Master of Divinity from Sacred Heart School of Theology in Hales Corners, Wis.

Prior to discerning his call to the priesthood, Deacon Cloos was a member of the U.S. Air Force and Navy Reserves from 1976-81. He worked as an accountant from 1986-88, electrician from 1988-90, did maintenance for Brown and Ferris Corporation from 1990-97, worked for Hollywood Entertainment Corporation from 1997-2007 and at ADM in Clinton from 2008-09. He entered the seminary in 2009.

Deacon Cloos completed his clinical pastoral education at St. Camillus Campus in Milwaukee, Wis., during the summer of 2012. He did internships at St. James Parish in Washington in 2011 and St. Mary Parish in Davenport in 2013. He was ordained a transitional deacon at Sacred Heart Cathedral on July 13, 2013. In addition, he attended the Institute for Priestly Formation in summer 2010 and assisted at the Cathedral Women’s Shelter. He also delivered food to Casa Maria Worker House in Milwaukee during his seminary studies.
Deacon Cloos plans to celebrate his first Mass as a priest on June 8 at Ss. Peter & Paul Parish in Springbrook.

Dcn. Young

Deacon Young, 53, graduated from California Polytechnic State Uni­versity in San Luis Obispo, Calif., with a B.S. in agricultural business management; the University of Arizona in Tucson with an M.S. in international extension; the University of Arizona with a B.A. in English; a Bachelor of Arts in theology from St. Joseph of Arimathea Anglican Theological Seminary in Berkeley, Calif., and Master of Divinity from Nashotah House Theo­logical Seminary in Nashota, Wis.

Young was on staff at the University of Arizona Library in the special collections and media center departments from 1987-91, a high school teacher in California and Arizona, completed his clinical pastoral education at Gundersen Lutheran Hos­pital in LaCrosse, Wis., in 1996, internships at St. Peter Episcopal Church in Oakland, Calif., from 1992-93 and St. Edmund’s Episcopal Church in Elm Grove, Wis., from 1995-97.

After ordination to the priesthood in the Episcopal Church he served as an assistant pastor at St. Paul Episcopal Church and school in Visalia, Calif., from 1998-2000; pastor at Trinity Episcopal Church in Baraboo, Wis., from 2000-04; and pastor at Christ Episcopal Church in Moline, Ill., from 2004-05. He later converted to Catholicism.

When Deacon Young decided to become a Catholic priest, he completed a Catholic studies program for former Epis­copal priests at Immaculate Conception Semi­nary at Seton Hall University in South Orange, N.J.

He was ordained a transitional deacon on March 25 at Assumption High School in Davenport. He currently teaches at Assumption High School and is serving at St. Alphonsus Church in Davenport and St. Peter Parish in Buffalo.

He is married to Jody and they have three children: Colin, Sara and Erin.

Roush

Roush, 60, just completed his third-year major seminary studies at Sacred Heart School of Theology in Hales Corners, Wis. A native of St. Mary Parish in Iowa City, he is a convert to Catholicism. He has two adult daughters. His wife, Cindy, died in 1997. Before entering the seminary, he worked for Monsanto Corporation in Muscatine for 25 years.

Trevino

Treviño, 28, completed his third year of theology studies at Mundelein Seminary in Mundelein, Ill., and is a native of St. Mary Parish in Moline, Ill.

Before entering the seminary, he studied journalism and political science at Black Hawk College in Moline and reported for Hola America, a Spanish-language publication in the Quad Cities.
