Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Every day, we are challenged to respond in some way to the pain and suffering that is so abundant in our world. In fact, many of us experience firsthand some type of suffering each and every day. However, we also realize that we have been truly blessed in so many ways. As Christians, we are asked to share those blessings, to lend a helping hand and to help alleviate the suffering of other members of our human family.
As we do so, we practice the charity that Pope Benedict XVI stated in his encyclical, Caritas in Veritate: “The more we strive to serve a common good corresponding to the real needs of our neighbors, the more effectively we love them.” From the day of his election, Pope Francis has reminded us of the Church’s fundamental responsibility to the poor and marginalized.
The Diocesan Works of Charity collection is one way that we, as local Church, can work to respond to suffering in our part of the world. The collection addresses special needs of people and organizations throughout the diocese. This last year the collection served many needs which included funds to church-based organizations which respond to the emergency needs of families through food pantries, clothing for children without adequate winter wear and assistance to homeless shelters and housing programs for those with special needs.
This special collection to assist with charitable needs in the Diocese of Davenport will be taken up at all Masses on the weekend of July 26-27. I thank you for sharing the Lord’s love by giving generously to this collection.
Ayudando aquellos que viven en nuestra diócesis
Queridos Hermanos y Hermanas en Cristo,
Cada día, tenemos el reto de responder de alguna manera al dolor y al sufrimiento que es tan abundante en nuestro mundo. De hecho, muchos de nosotros experimentamos de primera mano algún tipo de sufrimiento cada día. Sin embargo, también nos damos cuenta que hemos sido realmente bendecidos en muchas otras formas. Como cristianos, se nos pide compartir esas bendiciones, ofrecer una mano y ayudar a aliviar el sufrimiento de otros miembros de nuestra familia humana.
Al hacerlo, practicamos la caridad que el Papa Benedicto XVI dijo en su encíclica Caritas in Veritate: “Cuanto más nos esforzamos por servir a un bien común, que responda realmente a las necesidades de nuestros vecinos, el cuanto más efectivamente los amamos.” También, desde el día de su elección, el Papa Francisco nos ha recordado la responsabilidad fundamental de la Iglesia a los pobres y marginados.
La Colecta para las Obras de Caridad Diocesana es una de las formas en que nosotros, como Iglesia local, podemos trabajar para responder al sufrimiento en esta parte de nuestro mundo. La Colecta se dirige a las necesidades especiales de las personas y de las organizaciones a lo largo de toda la diócesis. Este año pasado, la Colecta sirvió a muchas necesidades que incluían fondos para las organizaciones basadas en la Iglesia, que respondan a las necesidades de emergencia de las familias a través de despensas de alimentos, ropa adecuada de invierno para niños y asistencia a los albergues y programas de vivienda para las personas con necesidades especiales.
Esta Colecta especial para ayudar con las necesidades de Caridad en la diócesis de Davenport, se realizará en todas las Misas el fin de semana del 26 y 27 de Julio. Les doy las gracias por compartir el amor del Señor, dando generosamente en esta Colecta.
