Iowa City — A conference commemorating the 70th anniversary of the dropping of atomic bombs that devastated Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, will be held Aug. 9 at the Ashton House, 820 Park St., Iowa City. The event begins at 9:30 a.m. Afterwards, from 4-6 p.m., a “Bike Around the Bomb” ride will help participants visualize the physical space annihilated by the bomb. Event speakers are Paul Chappell, Nuclear Age Peace Foundation Peace Leadership Director; and Steven Starr, of Senior Scientist Physicians for Social Responsibility, among other groups.
Bettendorf — St. John Vianney Parish will begin its 13 week GriefShare series on Aug. 16 from 2-4 p.m. in the Health Ministry area in the lower level of the church. West Liberty — Byzantine Catholic Outreach is celebrating a Divine Liturgy Aug. 6 at 7 p.m. at St. Joseph Parish. This is to celebrate the Transfiguration of the Lord (one of Byzantine Catholics’ 12 Great Feasts). There will be a Chrismation and first Communion that evening as well.

Davenport — St. Mary Parish is hosting a Hispanic food sale fundraiser Aug. 16 from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. behind the church. Steak tacos, enchiladas, Mexican corn on the cob, tortas and gorditas are among the food items which will be for sale.
Goose Lake — Assumption & St. Patrick Parish in Charlotte is hosting a beef and pork dinner with all the trimmings, including beverage and dessert on Aug. 9 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. The event will be held at the Millennium Ballroom in Goose Lake. Carry-outs are available. Cost is $10 for adults, $5.50 for children ages 4-12 years and free for children under 4 years old. Tickets available at the door the day of the event. There will also be a gift basket silent auction, children’s games, bingo and a country store.
Keokuk — A first Friday fish fry will take place at the Knights of Columbus Hall Aug. 7. Doors open at 5:30, serving begins at 6 p.m.
