Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
People of all faiths are seeking refuge from Syria and other countries embroiled in crisis and persecution, fleeing to Europe in numbers not seen since World War II. Many have died and many more are displaced. All are in need of life’s most basic necessities: food, water, shelter and clothing.
The Middle East, the cradle of the faith for Christians, Jews and Muslims, is not a place of co-existence but a broad and shifting war zone where various factions maneuver for dominance and power. Syria, especially, is a place where violence is directed at so many Christians and others who seek only to protect their children and survive. Life with peace and dignity is impossible.
I am asking parishes to take up a special collection for Catholic Relief Services (CRS) the weekend of Sept. 19-20 to respond to the needs of the many people who have been forced to flee.
Our Christian brothers and sisters and other innocent victims of the violence in the Middle East urgently need the assistance of the Catholic community of the United States. Thank you for your support of this special collection and for your continued prayers for the victims of this crisis.

Queridos Hermanos y Hermanas en Cristo,
Personas de todas las religiones están buscando refugio de Siria y de otros países que se encuentran en crisis y en persecución, huyendo hacia Europa en números tan altos que no se habían visto desde la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Muchos han muerto y muchos más han sido desplazados. Todos están en busqueda de las necesidades más básicos de la vida: alimentos, agua, ropa y refugio.
El Medio Oriente, cuna de la fe fe para los cristianos, judíos y mulsumanes, no es un lugar de convivencia, sino una amplia y cambiante zona de guerra, donde muchos grupos pelean por el dominio y el poder. Siria, sobretodo, es un lugar donde la violencia se dirige especialmente a los cristianos y a otros, que solo buscan proteger a sus hijos y lograr sobrevivir. La vida con paz y dignidad se hace imposible.
