Sr. Mauro, former teacher, dies

Sister Joanne Mauro, CHM, died Aug. 28 in Des Moines.

She was born Feb. 5, 1940, in Des Moines to Joseph Louis Mauro, Sr. and Margaret Randa Mauro. She attended St. Anthony School, graduating from St. Joseph Academy in Des Moines in 1957.She entered the Congregation of the Humility of Mary on Sept. 8, 1957, taking the name Sister Mary Margene. She professed vows on Aug. 1, 1960, and earned degrees from Ottumwa Heights College in Ottumwa, Marycrest College in Davenport and Drake University, Des Moines.

Her lifelong ministry in Catholic elementary schools was served in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and in the Iowa cities of Ottumwa, Davenport, Centerville, Neola, Marshalltown and Des Moines, where she ministered from 1982 until several months before her death.

Her funeral was held Sept. 1 at St Anthony Church in Des Moines with interment at Glendale Cemetery, Des Moines.
