Diversity enriches us

To the Editor:
U.S. Representative Steve King’s tweet about how “we can’t restore our civilization with somebody else’s babies” bothers me a lot. He is referring to white babies. He wants more white babies. However, the numbers don’t support his wishes. Using 2014 statistics, there were 11.6 white births per 1,000 in Iowa while black births were 19.5/1,000; Asian births were 18.4/1,000 and Hispanic births were 20.3/1,000. (State Data Center of Iowa)
Clearly the chances are we are going to be seeing more “dark eyes” and, speaking for myself, I welcome the diversity this represents. Our culture will be enriched in every way — food, art, music, dance, poetry, etc. Also as an older Iowan, I see the need for younger people in our work force. My wish is that we be a welcoming community for all Iowa babies, regardless of where their genetics come from.
