Priest’s father was active volunteer

John Joseph Hennen, 92, of Ottumwa, father of Father Thom Hennen, died April 19 at Hospice House in Ottumwa.

John Hennen was born Jan. 14, 1927, in Alberta, Minn., to John Joseph and Helen Irene Beimel Hennen. He married Jo’an Marie Hagle on July 26, 1954, in Minneapolis. She preceded him in death Feb. 19, 2019.

He was a member of St. Mary of the Visitation Parish in Ottumwa where he had served on parish council and was a member of Knights of Columbus Council No. 888. He had been a member of the American Society of Agricultural Engineers, served on the Ottumwa Transit Authority Board, was a member of Hospice Serving Davis and Wapello Counties Auxiliary and was a hospice volunteer. He is survived by 11 children

His funeral is scheduled for April 29 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary of the Visitation in Ottumwa. Fathers Thom Hennen and James Betzen, C.PP.S., will concelebrate. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation begins at 10 a.m. April 28 at Reece Funeral Home. A Christian wake service will be held at 3 p.m. that day followed by a family visitation until 6 p.m. Sunday.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mary of the Visitation, Hospice Serving Davis & Wapello Counties, or Good Samaritan Society-Ottumwa.
