Call flu ‘H1N1’

Facebooktwittermail

Please, please stop referring to H1N1 flu as “swine” flu (The Catholic Messenger, Sept. 17, Page 1, photo caption). This is inaccurate.

John Carlson had an excellent article about this in the Des Moines Register on Sept. 16. I quote:

“There is, of course, no relationship between hogs and the transfer of the disease to humans. None. Not if they sneeze on you. Not if you eat a chop.”

Carlson goes on to say that U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack is conducting a campaign to get the media to quit calling it swine flu. But even the Department of Health and Human Services can’t seem to get it right. Oh my! Sorry, but this really bugs me.
