LITURGY/PRAYER

East Moline, Ill.— A pro-life Mass will be celebrated Oct. 3 at 8 a.m. at St. Anne Catholic Church. A rosary will follow in church and then in front of Planned Parenthood in Bettendorf.

Iowa City — Johnson County Right to Life will sponsor the 22nd annual Life Chain from 2-3 p.m. Oct. 4 on Dubuque Street from Park Road to Jefferson Street. Life signs will be provided. Water, lawn chairs, umbrellas and strollers are welcome. The event will be held rain or shine.

Bettendorf — The Davenport Diocesan Council of Catholic Women will meet Oct. 8 at St. John Vianney Parish’s activity center. Registration will take place from 9:30-10 a.m. Meeting topics include truth and myths about health care, presented by Sister Pat Miller, CHM, and an overview of the National Council of Catholic Women’s annual convention. Bettendorf — St. John Vianney Parish will offer an “Understanding Grief Educational Program” from 1-2:30 p.m. Oct. 6, 13, 27 and Nov. 3. There is no meeting Oct. 20. Iowa City — The “Forming Grateful Hearts” mission will take place Oct. 5-7 from 7-8:30 p.m. at St. Mary Parish Hall. Father Frank DeSiano will speak. All are welcome.

Solon — The Davenport Diocese’s Stewardship Day will take place Oct. 6 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at St. Mary Parish in Solon. The event includes prayer, reflection, lay witness talks, breakout sessions, Mass with Bishop Martin Amos, parish networking and a keynote address by Father Frank DeSiano. He is a nationally recognized expert on evangelization, stewardship and discipleship. There is no registration fee. Lunch will be offered for a  freewill offering.  Register by Sept. 30 to Dan Ebener, ebener@davenportdiocese.org.

RETREATS

Wheatland — “The Recipe for Motherhood,” a retreat, will take place at Our Lady of the Prairie Retreat near Wheatland Monday, Sept. 28,  from 9:30 a.m. – 2 p.m. Presenter will be Marilyn Riley. Clinton — Prince of Peace Parish will host its 37th annual pork dinner and family festival Sept. 27 from noon to 5 p.m. at St. Boniface Hall. The event will feature kids’ games, beer tent, hourly raffles and music. Cost is $7.50 for adults, $3.50 for children ages 5-12, and free for children younger than 5.

Davenport — Knights of Columbus Council No. 14678 will hold a spaghetti dinner in the All Saints Catholic School cafeteria from 5:30-7 p.m. Sept. 26. A 50/50 raffle also will take place. Proceeds benefit Holy Family Parish.

Davenport — The Taste of Sacred Heart festival for Sacred Heart Cathedral will take place Sept. 27 from 12:30-3:30 p.m. Students will sing and Vietnamese girls will dance.  Bratwursts, hot dogs, German potato salad, baked beans, and Italian, Irish, Mexican, Slavic, Vietnamese and Chinese foods will be served. Cash prizes of $250, $100 and $50 will be awarded. The event also features pony rides and kids’ games. Gift cards and other items for a drawing may be donated to the parish office.

Houghton — St. John’s Harvest Festival will take place Sept. 27. A roast beef dinner will be served at the Knights of Columbus Hall from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Carryouts are available. The event also will include a country and candy kitchen, raffle drawing at 3 p.m. and auction at 11:30 a.m. Raffle items include a Cub Cadet Enforcer 54 with a 12-foot utility trailer or $7,500 cash.

Iowa City — St. Wenceslaus Church, 630 E. Davenport St., will host a fall pork loin dinner Oct. 4 from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Menu includes pork loin, mashed potatoes and gravy, dressing, sauerkraut, Czech green beans, applesauce, Kolache, dessserts, Texas Roadhouse rolls and beverages. Cost is $10 for adults and $4 for children ages 4-10. Carryouts are available at the rectory or garage from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The dinner will include musical entertainment.

Lone Tree — St. Mary Parish will host its fall auction Sept. 27. A silent auction will take place from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and a regular auction will follow at 1 p.m. Lunch will be served beginning at 11 a.m. Participants can bid on homemade pies, cakes and crafts.

Melrose — St. Patrick Church will host a fall festival Sept. 27 beginning with 10 a.m. Mass. A ham and roast beef dinner with all the trimmings will follow. There will be games for children, a country store, raffle and  auction. Dinner is $8 for adults, $4 for children ages 5-11 and free for children ages 4 and younger. Carryouts and deliveries are available.

Muscatine — Ss. Mary & Mathias Parish’s sixth annual Oktoberfest will take place Oct. 4 at 12:30 p.m. at St. Mathias Church. The event will feature food, music, kids’ games and crafts.

Muscatine — An old-fashioned chicken supper will take place Sept. 27 from 4-6:30 p.m. in Gannon Hall.  Cost is $8 for adults and $4 for children 5 and younger.  Meal includes fried chicken, baked beans, potato salad, coleslaw, roll, homemade desserts and drinks. The dinner will raise funds for the Catholic Daughters scholarship program. Tickets are available in the parish office at (563) 263-1416.

Newton — A flea market and craft sale will take place Oct. 3 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the McCann Center. Rolls, soup, sandwiches, pies and beverages will be served. Rummage goods, toys, baked goods, wood items, crafts, jewelry and ceramics will be featured. Admission is free. Sale proceeds go to the Sacred Heart Scholarship Fund.

St. Paul —The 58th annual God’s Acre Sale is Oct. 3-4 at St. James Church. A turkey dinner with all the trimmings will be served from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 4. Baked goods and homemade candies will also be available. The charity auction is Oct. 3 from 7-10:30 p.m. It resumes Oct. 4 at 11:30 a.m. with grain sales. A raffle for a choice of $1,500 worth of Case IH tools or $1,500 cash will take place at 3 p.m. Oct. 4. Tickets cost $2.50 each. Winners need not be present to win. A lunch stand will be open all afternoon and evening and feature turkey and roast beef sandwiches and homemade pies.

Wilton — St. Mary Parish and Altar & Rosary Society will host a ham and turkey dinner Oct. 4 from 1-4 p.m. in the parish hall. The event also will include a country store with crafts, grab bags and homemade candies and goodies. Cost is $8 for adults, $3 for children ages 5-12 and free for children 4 and younger. The public is welcome, and carryouts are available.
