Daniel R. Welter, 62, of Long Grove, died suddenly Monday, July 30, 2012.

A visitation will be held at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, 16550 290th Street, Long Grove, IA 52756 on Thursday, August 2, 2012 from 4 to 7 p.m. with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m.  The funeral mass will be held on Friday, August 2, 2012 at St. Ann’s Catholic Church at 10:30 a.m.  There will be an additional visitation at the church Friday morning from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service.  Burial will follow at the St. Ann’s Cemetery.  Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Dan was born in Dubuque, Iowa, on September 16th, 1949, the son of John and Zita Welter.  He grew up in East Dubuque, Illinois.  Dan graduated from Wahlert High School and the University of Wisconsin at Platteville.  He married Lori Walsh on June 26th, 1971, at St. Joseph the Worker in Dubuque.  They recently celebrated their 41st year of marriage.  Dan was a loyal John Deere employee, retiring in 2007 after thirty-two years of employment.

Dan was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, and was passionate about spending time with them.  Dan enthusiastically indulged his grandchildren’s requests for 4-wheeler and tractor rides, chocolate-sprinkled donuts, ice cream sundaes, and M&M treats, trips to the playground, pool and Scott County Park, as well as fishing and boating on the river.  He instilled a strong work ethic in his children and grandchildren.  They enjoyed working together on projects around the house and in town.

Dan was a jack-of-all-trades and enjoyed tinkering in his shed.  He loved hunting, golfing, walking, biking, camping, and woodworking.  Dan was generous with his time.  He often used his skills to help others with home, church and school projects.  Dan was also an active member of St. Ann’s Church, volunteering for many committees and activities.

He is survived by his wife, Lori; four children, Nicholas (Misty) Welter of Olathe, KS, David (Amy) Welter of Corvallis, OR, Joseph (Katie) Welter of Iowa City, IA, and Kari (Ken) Uhlenkamp of Iowa City, IA; nine grandchildren, Jacob, Carly, Riley, Samuel, Jonas, Natalie, Olivia, Andrew, and Nathan; mother Zita Welter; siblings William (Dorothy)Welter, Robert (Roberta)Welter, Kathleen (Steve) Holtz, Mark (Sara)Welter, and Jeffrey (Donna) Welter; brother-in-law John (Sheila)Walsh; sister-in-law Marti (Jack)Walsh; eight nephews and ten nieces.

He was preceded in death by his father John Welter, father-in-law Ignatius Walsh, mother-in-law Dorothy Walsh, and great niece Anna Weitz.

Dan was an active blood donor.  In memory of him, a blood donation may be given to a local blood bank.  Memorials may also be contributed to the Daniel Welter Memorial Fund.
