DAVENPORT — Humility of Mary Shelter’s fourth-annual Sleep Out will take place Oct. 17-18 at Brady Street Stadium. Gates open at 4 p.m.
The event will raise awareness for homelessness while raising money for the shelter, which works to provide temporary housing and services to men and women experiencing homelessness. It is an 78-bed facility with four overflow mats for a total capacity of 82 people per night.
Humility of Mary Shelter reports that over 400 people each night in the Quad Cities have no permanent place to call home.
The Sleep Out will include a Build a Shelter competition once again. The purpose of the contest is to put oneself in the shoes of a homeless person for one night by building a shelter from only the materials that a person living on the streets would have, including cardboard, plastic and tarps. No metal items will be allowed. Registration to compete includes a special “Sleep Out” shirt. Cost is $20 per person or $60 for a family of four. Businesses can participate for $100. Prizes will be awarded in each category.
Greg Dwyer of 97X will serve as master of ceremonies for the event. Entertainment includes performances from Metropolitan Youth Group of Rock Island, Illinois, magician David Casas, Comedy Sports and more. General admission is $10 per person, which is enough money to support one bed for one night for a participant at the Shelter.
No alcohol or pets will be admitted. Concessions are available for purchase.
The event will conclude Oct. 18 at 9 a.m. Breakfast will be available along with coffee and milk.
