Dear Parishioners,
When a scholar of the law asks Jesus, “Who is my neighbor?” Jesus tells the parable of the Good Samaritan. Then Jesus asks the scholar, “Which of these three, in your opinion, was neighbor to the robbers’ victim?” He answered, “The one who treated him with mercy.” Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.” (Luke 10: 25-37).
Jesus is teaching us that love of neighbor means to “go” and to “do.” To love means to act.
Pope Francis reminds us to “go” to the peripheries and to “do” the works of mercy. We are to feed the hungry, welcome the stranger, care for the sick, teach the young, visit the prisoner and pray for the living and the dead. This is how we act with love of neighbor.
We can extend our love to countless additional neighbors by giving a generous gift to the Annual Diocesan Appeal. Our gift to this appeal helps the diocese serve all the parishes, which are actively engaged in many areas of ministry — liturgy, faith formation, evangelization, stewardship, family life, social action and vocations.
In doing so, we can show our love for neighbors — from Catholic education and Catholic Charities to support for seminarians and retired priests, from couples preparing for marriage to those preparing for the diaconate and lay ministry.
In my first year as your bishop, I have been blessed to meet many of you. I appreciate your expression of your love in your prayers for me. I return that love in my daily prayer for you, my neighbors.

Cuando un doctor de la ley le preguntó a Jesús: « ¿Y quién es mi prójimo?». Jesús les contó la parábola del Buen Samaritano. Entonces, Jesús le preguntó al doctor de la Ley: “¿Cuál de los tres te parece que se portó como prójimo del hombre asaltado por los ladrones?”. «El que tuvo compasión de él», le respondió el doctor. Y Jesús le dijo: «Ve, y procede tú de la misma manera». (Lucas 10, 25-37)
Jesús está enseñándonos que el amor al prójimo significa ‘ve’ y ‘haz’. Amar significa actuar.
El Papa Francisco nos recuerda ‘ir’ a las periferias y ‘hacer’ el trabajo de la misericordia. Nosotros debemos dar de comer al hambriento, dar la bienvenida al extranjero, cuidar de los enfermos, enseñar a los jóvenes, visitar a los prisioneros y orar por los vivos y difuntos. Esto es cómo nosotros debemos actuar en el amor al prójimo.
Debemos extender nuestro amor a un incontable contingente de prójimos ofreciendo un generoso apoyo económico a la Colecta Anual Diocesana. Nuestro aporte a esta colecta ayuda a que la diócesis sirva a todas las parroquias, que participan activamente en muchas áreas del ministerio – liturgia, formación de fe, evangelización, mayordomía, vida familiar, acción social y vocaciones.
Al hacerlo, podemos mostrar nuestro amor por el prójimo, desde la educación católica y Caridades Católicas hasta el apoyo a los seminaristas y sacerdotes jubilados, desde parejas preparándose para el matrimonio como aquellos que se preparan para el diaconado y el ministerio laico.
En mi primer año como su obispo, he sido bendecido al conocer a muchos de ustedes. Aprecio su expresión de su cariño en sus oraciones por mí. Yo retorno ese amor en mis oraciones diarias por ustedes y por sus prójimos.
