During this Advent season, which begins Dec. 1, many parishes throughout the Diocese of Davenport will hold additional penance services during which multiple priests will be available to hear confessions. Below is a list of communal penance services that parishes provided to The Catholic Messenger.

According to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), the sacrament of penance challenges Catholics to examine their hearts inwardly and then express outwardly the ways they have failed to love God and neighbor, through personal sin and social sin.

Examination of conscience teaches Catholics to look squarely at their lives to see how well they are living the Gospel (Pope Benedict XVI, address to participants in the Course on the Internal Forum organized by the Tribunal of the Apostolic Penitentiary, March 25, 2011).

In recognizing their failings, Catholics can bring about a conversion in their hearts so that they are receptive to God’s forgiveness and allow God’s grace to heal them and their relationships (USCCB).
